Many people have recognized the potential of the internet as a sales medium , yet very few people have actually made a success of it.
But the reality is that your clients and customers are more educated than ever before about what they buy, and are demanding that they be able to find out everything about what they want before making a purchase - and they are finding it. In the 10 or so years I have been facilitating people getting websites up and running - and making money from them - I have seen what worked and what didn't. So what do you need to do to get a website that really sells?
  1. You need a domain name . This is the address that people type into their browser in order to find your website. Ideally, it should be something that makes sense and relates to your product or your company name. Remember that you are trying to influence your prospect's behaviour to purchase from you, so it needs to make sense
  2. A website . This website should have a shopping cart and the facility for you to add products and manage your products and orders without having to be a programmer or call a programmer whenever you need something done
  3. A merchant account - the internet version of a speedpoint machine. While it is possible to sell online without a merchant account (and store orders for processing later with a speedpoint machine), you run into some difficulties: The site needs to be secure - both with a secure certificate, and from an access point of view. Many people still won't leave their details because they don't now who and when their details will be accessed or removed
  4. An email address at your domain. Some successful sites still use free email addresses and addresses provided by their internet access providers, it is still better to have your own - for 2 reasons: (1) Professional look of your own domain name and (2) not being tied to your internet access provider (e.g. what happens if you don't want your 3G account and would rather have some other access - do you want to lose your email address?)
  5. Mailing list software - this allows you to communicate with your prospects easily and precisely. Communication is vital to getting your prospects to know and trust you
  6. Affiliate Programme - Imagine if you could hire a person to market for you all the time (at their own expense) and only pay them when a sale came through your from them? With an affiliate programme, you get other website owners and email list owners to market your product and you can see precisely when they generate a sale for you (and then you can reward them for that). It also helps to know of the types of marketing you are doing are more or less successful than others
  7. Information:
    • How do you market your site?
    • How do you email your prospects?
    • How do you write a sales letter that actually sells?

    I'm always reminded of the engineer that eventually retired from the company he'd spent decades working at. About 6 months after he left, the main machine he used to work on stopped working properly, and the guys couldn't figure it out.
